Every house has a fridge atleast and rarely people knows that it may explode. In an incident at Jari Mari area in Mumbai 4 person of a family has been killed when their fridge had a explosion.
In all coolent device AC or a fridge coolent gases are used and with a compressor and throttling impact they used to cool.
If due to a short circut, wear and tear of the tubes and wiring, these gases which are kept at a presure in compresure and tube may cause explosion, because these are highly inflamable.

Hi Vijay,
I know of a case where the Ac caught fire and blew up. Luckily the person in the room was awake and not asleep. Accidents can happen anywhere. That’s life. Precaution is all we can take to prevent them.

Yes,you mentioned very rightly ”Accidents can happen anywhere. That’s life. Precaution is all we can take to prevent them.”
These are esential eqpts needed in a household but users must be aware about the dangers involved.Gas cylender, geysers all are req safety measures, but the point is the coolent gas is poisionous[toxic] also.

All the comforts in life come for a price. Some people are lucky to exists without facing the -ve effects while some, like the family you have mentioned about, have to pay the high price of comfort living.

However it is unusual to hear a fridge explode. Casualties due to gas cylinders, fuel pipelines, short circuits are more common.

Thanks to bring it to our notice.

Yeah, it is a cause for concern. Good thing, I don’t own many appliances in my condominium unit. Next month though, I will invest in an electric stove, ref, oven toaster, washing machine and range hood so I’ll have to be more careful with the wiring next month. For all homeowners out there, maybe it’s wise to invest in a well-maintained fire extinguisher or automatic sprinkler system that activates in case of a fire. My unit is furnished with a sprinkler while directly installed outside my door is a noisy and sensitive fire alarm that the building administrator provided. It gives me peace of mind just thinking that I may be given notice [even when I’m sleeping] if something’s on fire. Lastly, unplug electric appliances when not in use.

I’ve heard of a similar incident few years back in Kolkata, although luckily no one was killed. Mechanical defects I believe are largely responsible for such incidents and manufacturers should be more careful with their products.

Do you have any information about the manufacturer of the fridge? May be consumers should be made aware of such a defective brand.

Yes you have pinpoint one of the reason, which must be take care of.Due to competition and inflation, these manufacturers are using cheap materials, which may be the reason.

If the manufacturers are to be blamed for the exploding fridge, they should compensate the victims for their erroneous ways. Maybe the victims can contact their insurance company to pay for the damages and ask that further legal action be taken against the manufacturers. However, Arpita is also right in saying that consumers should be aware of the products that they’re buying. Cheap doesn’t always translate to better products. Reasonaly-priced yet dependable products are the best bets.:)

Yes,Kristine, and thanks Arpita. Many times peoples just follow the trends, when even there is no necesity. Most of the time cooler is better than the Ac’s for health and power saving both in dry climaic conditions.

By ”cooler”, do you mean an electric fan? If so, I would have to agree. You’re welcome.:)

Oh yeah, I think I already know the cooler you’re talking about. You can be an endorser of coolers.:)

Cooler means air cooler; something short of air conditioner because it just cools the air and does not condition it for warmth.

I have heard of such thing before...thanks for posting this...all appliances should be checked and serviced regularly...something we all overlook...most LPG accidents are due to negligence on the part of users...

Kristine,Madhuri and Radhika thanks but one thing is for sure, negligency creates accidents, however simple a thing may be.Its occored at a house of one of my best friend [a BITS Gold medalist, whose father was also an engineer].when they reached there house after a party, got smell of LPG leakage.Initially they kept their door open so that the gas’ll come out. After 5-10 min they thought to accelerate the process and went inside to start the fan.As he on the switch, the explosion occoured due to spark.

Are you sure this was not caused by witches?
1 Stars
Lol Witches ! It actually depends on the line through which you are using electricity at times. People simply tend to blame appliances but you have to see all angles to accurately find out the cause of such rare incidents. It is not that a fridge blasts everyday. At least I heard about it for the first time. The service wire that runs into a house meter needs to be checked. A slight leakage can make every electric appliance being used in the house a potential bomb.

I have never heard of a fridge exploding. Seriously this is very very strange. I have heard of exploding laptops and cellphones, even microwaves. This certainly is a new one on that list. I guess every gadget is unsafe; we need to make sure that the products we buy are good quality. There is only so much one can do to stay safe!

Thank you for the post and for the push to get me to have my fridge revised tomorrow..It’s been acting odd for a while due to fluxuations in energy here in Mexico, but I just wasn’t ready to put the money out for a repair man or a new fridge..Better a repair or a fridge than one of my family..Thanks again.
